Accessible College can help alleviate your worries

Do you worry if your student with a physical disability or health condition possesses the skills that will be necessary for college and independent living?

I will work with your student to make sure they are able to:

One thing that surprises most parents, is that once your student starts college, they are no longer a part of the process to request accommodations due to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Students with physical disabilities and health conditions who want to receive accommodations in college will have to self-disclose to the disability support office and follow the process to request accommodations. For many students this is the first time that they have had to navigate this aspect of their life independently. Of course, there is a lot that needs to be done before the student even starts the college search process, and Accessible College can help! I offer a number of services that are aimed at making sure that your student has the necessary tools in place to be successful. After each session we will send a customized email summarizing our conversation and outlining the next steps.

Services

Accessible College will work with students starting in 9th grade all the way through graduate school.

I offer support in a number of areas including:

Students with physical disabilities have unique needs. Students and families have many tasks ahead of them during this process, including identifying college accommodations (academic, residential, and programmatic) and preparing the student to be able to self-advocate. Families may also have to hire a Personal Care Attendant (PCA), and/or navigate different aspects of the students’ care. These processes take a lot of time in order to make sure we can get it right! The earlier we can start working with your student, the better! Accessible College provides comprehensive planning services to support your student starting in 9th grade.

The transition to college can be challenging for all students, but students with physical disabilities and health conditions may experience more complications with their transition to college life. No longer will they have the structure of high school, or the immediate oversight of family. We can provide coaching for your student throughout their time in college.

Josie Badger
DHCE, CRC, J Badger Consulting President and RAISE Co-Director, May 2020.
Annie’s guidance helped me really get to the crux of matters, and avoid the vague answers typically provided by college representatives. She also helped me think about the day as a whole and think of each step, and examine issues that don’t really come up in the high school setting.
