Annie Tulkin sat down for a chat with Chaz Hayden to talk about his novel “The First Thing About You,” in which the main character, Harris, is a 15 year old boy with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) who is navigating moving from California to New Jersey, entering a new school, and hiring a new nurse. The book is witty and has a teen rom-com vibe. Chaz talked about why he wrote the book and how his experience as a person with SMA informed his book. Chaz also shared experience moving across the country to attend the University of Arizona with his mom as a caregiver.
