July 26, 2020 was the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law has had a huge impact on access to higher education for students with disabilities. In the United States, approximately 19% of undergraduate students receive accommodations, directly benefitting from the ADA. Accessible College acknowledges the incredible organizing, patience, and perseverance of the disability rights activists and supporters who made the passage of the ADA possible. We continue to grow by learning about the history and diversity of the disability rights movement in the US. We encourage you to grow with us, and learn more about the passage of ADA and the disability rights movement today. Here are a few resources:
- Crip Camp: A documentary film now available on Netflix. Crip Camp starts in 1971 at Camp Jened, a summer camp in New York described as a “loose, free-spirited camp designed for teens with disabilities”.The film focuses on those campers who turned themselves into activists for the disability rights movement and follows their fight for accessibility legislation.
- Disability Visibility Project: The Disability Visibility Project is an online community dedicated to creating, sharing, and amplifying disability media and culture. You can read the oral history project interviews with people with disabilities and check out the podcast.
- A.D.A Now!: NPR’s Throughline covered the 30th anniversary of the ADA- “through first-person stories, we look back at the making of this movement, the history of how disability came to be seen as a civil rights issue, and what the disability community is still fighting for 30 years later.”
At Accessible College, we bring this lens to our practice in working with students with physical disabilities and health conditions and their families.
